Morocco's successful bid is a significant milestone marks the second time the Kingdom has hosted the AFCON, previously doing so in 1988.

After a series of delays and much anticipation, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has finally unveiled Morocco as the hosts for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

This decision comes as a replacement for Guinea, who were originally set to host the tournament but faced significant challenges in meeting the necessary infrastructure and facility requirements.

Morocco's successful bid is a significant milestone marks the second time the Kingdom has hosted the AFCON, previously doing so in 1988.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup semi finalist withdrew from hosting the 2015 edition due to concerns over the Ebola outbreak.

Now, with the successful hosting of both the Women's Africa Cup of Nations and the Club World Cup in the past year, Morocco is eager to once again showcase its capabilities on the footballing stage.

The bidding process for the 2025 AFCON saw Morocco competing against strong contenders, including South Africa, Zambia, and a joint bid from Benin and Nigeria.

Notably, Algeria was also initially in the running but withdrew both its bids for the 2025 and 2027 editions on the eve of the announcement.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe highlighted the importance of selecting the best alternative to ensure the tournament's success, emphasizing the need for top-tier transportation, logistics, accommodations, and state-of-the-art stadiums.

Guinea was originally selected to host the 2025 finals, on the same day that Cameroon and Cote d’Ivoire were given the mandates for the 2021 and 2023 editions respectively.

But their preparations faced numerous setbacks, including inadequate infrastructure and a lack of facilities.

A change in the country's leadership did not improve its situation, leading CAF to revoke Guinea's hosting rights.
