AFCON 2023 Player Ratings - Uganda 1-2 Algeria

Allan Damba 19:52 - 18.06.2023

Uganda suffered an agonizing 2-1 defeat to Algeria in the qualifiers of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations at the Japoma Stadium in Douala, Cameroon on Sunday.

But, how did the Ugandan players acquit themselves against one of the continent's finest sides.

Salim Jamal Magoola - 05

Close to nothing to do in the first half until he fumbled a long shot that was turned in by Mohamed Amoura. Saved well to deny Ramy Bansabaini just after halftime.

Kenneth Semakula - 05

Dealt with almost everything that came his way in the first half. Required to do more work in the second half against substitute Said Benrahma. Less impact going forward.

Aziz Kayondo - 06

A great defensive display from the former Vipers SC man in the first half. Weak tackle on the youthful Bedredine Bouanani for the counter attack that resulted into the second goal. More industrious going forward than Semakula on the opposite side.

Gift Fred - 06

Didn't do a lot wrong but was not as commanding as he normally acquits himself at SC Villa in the first half. A better second half from the Jogoo.

Halid Lwaliwa - 06

More assured defensively and a better passer of the ball

Like the rest, he wasn't great in air.

Khalid Aucho - 06

Neat and composed on the ball. A couple of forward passed, albeit, without significant impact.

Bobosi Byaruhanga - 05

A good, but faded as the game wore on. Too many sloppy passes and booked for a cynical challenge. Hooked off at halftime.

Farouk Miya - 06

Started brightly with a couple of surging passes in the final third. Drew a superb save from Algeria goalkeeper Anthony Louis Mandrea.

Rogers Mato - 06

Mato was decent on the evening|FUFA Image

A quiet first half before he nearly set Miya for what would have been the opener. Wasted a great opportunity in the second half as he blasted over. Good run later but shot wide as fatigue kicked in.

Emmanuel Okwi - 05

Ran his laces off in a hardworking display. Almost no threat at all and blazed over a freekick in the 61st minute. Hooked off after conceding the second goal.

Milton Karisa - 06

Karisa created two decent opportunities in the first and second half|FUFA Image

Never short for effort. Created a great opportunity for Miya in the first half and another for Mato in the second. Surprisingly replaced before the hour-mark.

Fahad Bayo - 06

Hardworking and threatening. Good composure to tap in Basangwa's cross.

Ismail Mugulusi - 06

Looked sharp and bright.

Travis Mutyaba - 06

Great feet and creative, but poor set piece deliveries.

Richard Basangwa - 06

No impact as he was limited with service, albeit, worked tirelessly since coming on. Superb cross to set Bayo for the consolation.
