Mato scored the all-important goal during the Cranes' 1-0 victory over Tanzania at the Benjamin Mkapa stadium in Dar-es-Salaam; the win brought the Cranes right back in contention for the 2023 AFCON qualification.

Any footballer would love to be in Rogers Mato's shoes, dwelling on the many compliments coming his way after his exploits for the national team at such a crucial stage in the AFCON qualification campaign.

Mato scored the all-important goal during the Cranes' 1-0 victory over Tanzania at the Benjamin Mkapa stadium in Dar-es-Salaam; the win brought the Cranes right back in contention for the 2023 AFCON qualification.

"It was a beautiful moment. If you actually look at the video, I looked in disbelief; I also asked myself if it's me who had scored, so it's the start of many things to come," Mato noted.

"But all that is in the past now; my focus is to do better, help KCCA FC to win the league and hopefully be selected for the next qualifier," Mato added.

AFCON 2023 Mato late strike redeems Cranes

The Cranes needed to avoid defeat to keep their chances of returning to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alive, but took all three thanks to added time winner that silenced the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.

The KCCA FC winger also admits that being summoned to the national team, players are obligated to perform; otherwise, the Cranes wouldn't pick up results.

"To be on the national team isn't about making the numbers but making a difference, and everyone on the team aims for that, so performance is key, so we all give it our best."

Now back to club duties, Mato Rogers is expected to play a pivotal role as KCCA FC host Maroons FC in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League on 1st April at the MTN Omondi stadium Lugogo.

Morley Byekwaso's charges lead the 15-team log on 35 points, one ahead of second-placed S.C Villa, although the Kasasiro Boys have two games in hand.
