The FIFA Awards 2023 has stirred up controversy with the exclusion of former Spain Women's head coach Jorge Vilda from the Best FIFA Women's Coach shortlist.

Controversy greeted the announcement of the 2023 FIFA The Best Women’s Coach of the Year nominees, as Spanish coach Jorge Vilda, who won the FIFA Women’s World Cup during the year under consideration, was notably left out.

Controversy surrounds Jorge Vilda's exclusion

Vilda, the former Spain Women's head coach, was left off the shortlist for the Best FIFA Women's Coach award for 2023, despite leading La Roja to their maiden success on the world stage this year.

This comes after Vilda’s recent sacking, largely for off-field issues, which he branded as "unfair." Vilda coached Spain to victory over England in the World Cup final but faced criticism for applauding suspended Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales during the now-infamous general meeting, which spelt the end for the former FA chief.

His departure from the role was part of the fallout from the controversy surrounding Rubiales, who was accused of sexual harassment by Spain midfielder Jenni Hermoso, whom he was seen kissing on the podium at the World Cup.

Shortlisted coaches for FIFA's The Best Women’s Coach of the Year Award

As opposed to Vilda, the FIFA Best Women's Coach shortlist features other prominent names.

These include Sarina Wiegman, who led the England women's team to the final of the 2023 World Cup, where they lost to Vilda’s Spain, as well as Emma Hayes of Chelsea and Barcelona's UWCL-winning coach Jonatan Giraldez.

FIFA The Best Women’s Coach of the Year criteria

The awards consider performances from different periods for men and women. For women's coaches, the period is from 1 August 2022 to 20 August 2023, while for men's coaches, it's from 19 December 2022 to 20 August 2023. The winners of these prestigious awards will be announced at a ceremony in London on January 15, 2024

Vilda's exclusion exposes dynamics coaching award

The FIFA Awards highlight the dynamic and often contentious world of football coaching. While some coaches, like Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola and England’s Wiegman, continue to receive accolades for their achievements, others, like Vilda, find themselves embroiled in controversies that overshadow their on-field successes.

The situation with Vilda, in particular, illustrates how off-field issues can significantly impact a coach's reputation and career trajectory.

The upcoming ceremony in London will not only celebrate the achievements of these top coaches but also remind us of the intricate blend of skill, leadership, and controversy that defines the world of football coaching.
