Newly crowned Kenya Premier League champions Gor Mahia are reaping big as they continue to celebrate their league title win.

Because of that, Jonathan McKinstry's charges are set for a handsome payday.

Main club sponsors Sportpesa had, during the trophy celebrations on Sunday, committed to gifting the side Ksh 3.5m, approximately UGX90M, for the job well done.

"Gor will get Kshs 3.5M for winning the league,” Sportpesa PRO Wilis Ojawang told Daily Nation.

“This is a bonus from the sponsorship coming from Sportpesa; there is definitely more to come heading into the 23/24 CAF Champions League," he added.

Club patron and leading Kenyan opposition leader Raila Amollo Odinga also rewarded the team with Ksh1.5M, approximately UGX38M, immediately after the game.

K'Ogalo also recieved a further Kshs 3M approximately Ugx76M from Eluid Owalo, the Cabinet Secretary for ICT on Monday.

Key to note, however, the Kenyan league winners didn't get any prize money as the league didn't have a title sponsor, something Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier termed unacceptable.

"To me, it's unheard of (league winners not receiving any monetary reward from the federation); I think Kenya is setting an interesting precedent that you can play but get nothing," Rachier, the Gor Mahia chairman queried.

"We want to plead with our beloved federation to have a rethink, and however minimal it is, it only behoves them to give us a kind of prize," Rachier added.

Gor Mahia overcame financial challenges and a transfer ban to claim their first league title since the 2019/20 season and their 20th overall in the club's history.
