The Hippos should have played at the World Cup but it was not held due to the coronavirus pandemic.

At the 2022 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Algeria, Titus Ssematimba featured once and that was in Uganda Cranes' final Group B game against Ivory Coast when he came on as a second-half substitute.

However, he is undoubtedly going to be a starter for the Uganda Hippos at the U20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt and he is optimistic that his CHAN experience will come into account to help his side go far in the competition.

“I got a chance to be around and play with the senior team at CHAN and I am hopeful that experience will come into account at AFCON,” Ssematimba told the FUFA media.

“We want to take this team as far as we can and I believe that together with my teammates we are going to put in the required effort to perform well.”

“Everyone in training is giving in their best with the guidance of the technical team and we are almost ready,” he noted.

Besides the Wakiso Giants FC midfielder, Travis Mutyaba is the other player that was at CHAN and will be part of the Hippos team at AFCON.

The SC Villa attacker had three substitute appearances unlike Ssematimba who was introduced once.

The duo will be integral at the tournament that gets underway on February 19th.

Jackson Mayanja's charges are pooled in Group B alongside Congo, South Sudan, and Central African Republic and will kick off against the latter on February 20th.

Mayanja has set the semifinals as his ultimate target and if achieved, the Hippos will play at the U20 FIFA World Cup later this year in Indonesia.

During their maiden appearance, the Hippos who were then under the guidance of now KCCA FC head coach Morley Byekwaso reached the final but lost to Ghana 2-0.
