Moses Opondo is returning to the Uganda Cranes for the first time since 2019 as the team prepares for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Algeria in Cameroon on June 18th.
Uganda Cranes currently sit third in Group F with four points, the same as Tanzania and one ahead of Niger in fourth place.
The team is in a must-win situation and Opondo, 25, currently playing for AC Horsens in the Danish topflight, is among those expected to deliver the results.

Uganda Cranes, just like any other team, goes through eras. The current regime is fading off and should be paving the way for a new generation led by the most talented of their generation.
“I expect a very difficult opponent for sure,” Opondo told FUFA in an interview.
“But right now, the focus is on a couple of training [sessions] that we have in order to get ready and expect everybody to give their all.
Prodigal son
The offensive midfielder was first called to the team in May 2018 and made his debut in a 2-1 loss to Niger in a friendly under Sebastian Desabre on June 8th of the same year.
He didn’t impress enough for a call for the 2019 AFCON in Egypt. Still, he returned and featured for a few minutes after the tournament as the team ushered in coach Johnathan McKinstry’s era with a 1-0 win over Ethiopia in Bahir Dar.
Opondo was subbed again until last month when Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic summoned him in a desperate move for results.
“Last time, I didn’t manage, but it feels great to be here. It’s been a very long time but I’ve been following the guys closely,” he says.
During that period, the midfielder went on to feature three seasons for Odense BK in the Danish topflight before crossing over to AC Horsens in January last year.
At Horsens, Opondo has played 41 games and scored three goals.
