Nasser and his Fiesta will be head turners at this weekend’s season opening Mbarara rally, which has already drawn up to 38 entries including three time national champion Jas Mangat.

Yasin Nasser’s proper debut behind the wheel of his newly acquired Ford Fiesta R5 was not the success he hoped for, but he is remaining positive about the experience and what the future holds.

The 2019 Uganda National Rally Champion came fourth at last weekend’s Machakos rally in Kenya, finishing over two minutes behind rally winner Jeremiah Wahome.

Despite his lack of pace, Nasser insists that he remains focused on the bigger picture, and recognizes that the rally was an important opportunity for him and the team to gain valuable experience in their new steed.

“Going to Machakos was the best decision,” Nasser told Kawowo, adding; “It proved to me, there is still a lot to learn with this Ford, in both aligning my driving skills and also the technical part.”

“We were so challenged with the first loop of the event. Many things happened. But after service and a few settings were done, we saw progress in the pace and had a good feeling about the car,” said Yasin.

Nasser admits that he may not be particularly ready to mount a title challenge as yet.

But he is determined to use every available opportunity to prepare for a big push both locally and in the Africa Rally Championship.

Nasser believes that the only way he can get championship winning form and pace gaining as much experience will be key to achieving that.

“After the Machakos rally, I plan to take part in every event that comes my way. That is the only way I will adapt quickly to the car,” Nasser explained.

“The main focus this year is ARC, but I realized there is more to do to feel comfortable to compete. And I will give myself time to get there,” he added.

The African Rally Championship will rave off on February 26 with the Bandama rally in Ivory Coast before it comes to East Africa with the Kenyan Equator rally and the Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally in May.
