Nansikombi was one of the nine foreign-based players named to start training and fight for a place on the final team but is now a big doubt.

The Uganda Gazelles are three days into their FIBA Women’s Afrobasket 2023 preparations, but two of their players are already doubts for the finals in Kigali, Rwanda.

US-based small forward Jamila Nansikombi and JKL Lady Dolphins’ Leticia Awor are the two players expected to miss out when head coach Alberto Antuna names his final team.

Nansikombi was one of the nine foreign-based players named to start training and fight for a place on the final team but is now a big doubt.

Unlike Jannon Otto, Melissa Akullu and Claire Lamunu, the other foreign-based players yet to jet in, whose arrival dates are known, Nansikombi’s situation is far from clear.

“Zama (Nansikombi) is not yet confirmed,” Gazelles team manager Victoria Ntale told Pulse Sports.

“She is still finalizing some things. We should know by the end of this week if she will join the team,” she added.

Reports indicate that the former JKL Lady Dolphins player has issues with her travel documents, and it is unlikely they will be resolved in time for the team’s training and action at Afrobasket.

Awor, meanwhile, is nursing an injury suffered in her team’s National Basketball League game with JT Lady Jaguars at the start of the second round.

The knee injury has kept the player sidelined despite her presence at the training session.

While the two are in a race against time to make the team, US-based centre Maria Najjuma jetted in and was part of Wednesday’s training session at the Africa Bible University in Lubowa.

The former Uganda Gazelles U18 player became the fifth US-based player to join the team after

Jane Asinde, Priscilla Abby, Victoria Mukisa and Lydia Babirye.

Flavia Oketcho, Melissa Akullu and Janon Otto are the next players expected to join the team this week, while Claire Lamunu will be the last of the lot.

The Gazelles are scheduled to train until July 15, when the final 12 will be announced. Those will then enter residential camp for two weeks before flying out to Kigali, Rwanda, for the tournament.
