Fifteen Ugandan players in both men's and women's singles were eliminated at the first hurdle.

The Uganda International Badminton Challenge tournament started off on a sad note for Uganda on Tuesday at the MTN Arena Lugogo.

Fifteen Ugandan players in both men's and women's singles were eliminated at the first hurdle.

Top male seed Brian Kasirye and Africa mixed championship gold medalist Fadilah Mohammed Rafi are among the top players who were eliminated at the first stage.

Muhammad Ssali was the first to be eliminated by Germany's Carmilo Borst in two straight sets 21-6, 21-9. He was followed by Shilton Tayebwa who lost to Hussein Shaheed in straight sets 21-9, 21-12.

Mwambu Kenneth also lost to Mica Ivancic in straight sets 21-14, 21-14, as well as Denis Omara, who lost to Asskash Ravikuma 21-6, 21-8.

Top seed Brian Kasirye won a set but was unable to stay afloat as he lost to India's Aditya Gupta in three sets 21-3, 16-21, 21-11.

In the women's category, Keisha Fatimah beat Olivia Betty Kyomukama 21-7, 21-2. Nakayiwa Goretti lost to Layna Luxmi 21-9, 21-8, while Sarah Namugoba lost to Wong Ling 21-3, 21-11.

Uganda will now hope that Husina Kobugabe and Tracey Naluwoza, who reached the round of 32, will go all the way in the women's singles.
