The tradition of boat racing among the kingdom’s residents has been around for centuries, local officials say, and it helps the community to celebrate its culture and to emphasize unity.

Buganda Kingdom is buzzing with excitement as the Buganda Royal Regatta returns to its waters after a three-year hiatus.

This prestigious event, known for its thrilling water sports, celebration of tradition, and the vibrant spirit of Buganda is set to make a grand comeback under the leadership of Eng. Ben Immanuel Misagga, who has been reconfirmed as the chairman of the Organising Committee.

The Buganda Royal Regatta has captured the hearts of water sports enthusiasts and culture aficionados alike, making it a highly anticipated event.

The tradition of boat racing among the kingdom’s residents has been around for centuries, local officials say, and it helps the community to celebrate its culture and to emphasize unity.

"We want to build a product that will have many people interested in it,” said Buganda Kingdom Minister for Youth, Sports, and Recreation, Henry Sekabembe, highlighting the committee's aspirations for the regatta.

“We also want this event to have a business direction, but you can't achieve it if you have not built the other two aspects."

With Misagga at the helm, supported by a team of dedicated individuals, the committee aims to elevate the regatta to international standards, attracting tourists and fostering a sense of unity among participants and spectators.

Joining Misagga on the committee will be Faridah Nakazibwe, assuming the role of vice chairman.

Other esteemed members include Olive Akulo, Patricia Najjemba, Ronnie Mutebi, Joseph Mugagga, Batenga Nakisozi, Angela Nambooze, Morris Mukiibi, Aisha Nassanga, Robert Lwanga, and Hassan Kiyemba.

"We want to have the regatta on international standards so that it brings in tourists,” Misagga enthusiastically expressed his vision for the event.

“We are reviving water sports in Buganda, and so many people are excited about this competition. We believe it is going to pull big crowds from different parts of the country,”

This year's Buganda Royal Regatta promises to be a unique experience as it embraces a new format.

Unlike previous editions, the competition will be spread across different parts of Buganda, allowing for a wider reach and greater participation.

By decentralizing the event, the committee aims to engage various communities within the kingdom and showcase the rich cultural heritage and sporting prowess of Buganda.

The regatta's primary objective extends beyond the realm of sports, aiming to celebrate the revival of water sports and its associated legacy in Buganda Kingdom.

Reflecting on the success of the previous edition, which took place in 2019 at Nabugabo Sand Beach in Masaka, it was Buddu who emerged victorious, thriving on their home advantage.

They dominated the sprints categories, leaving Bulemeezi and Gomba in their wake, securing second and third place respectively.
