Joseph Cwinya-ai emerged victorious at the annual Venus Open tournament held at Tooro Club over the weekend.

The event marked the return of the Tusker Malt Lager sponsored Uganda Open Tours, which aims to make golf more accessible and inclusive in the country.

Cwinya-ai, who won his fourth consecutive Venus Open title, expressed his determination to rediscover the form that saw him dominate the amateur scene in 2019.

"I'm trying to get back the lost form I had when I dominated everything in the country," he told New Vision.

Cwinya-ai beat Tooro-bred golfers Frank Mugisa (72) and Titus Okwong (73) to the annual championship by two and three strokes respectively.

"Any tournament on my home course has always been easy or sure win for me because not even a pro can dare me on this course.”

“Despite the dry conditions on the course, I didn't find that as a challenge," Cwinya-ai continued.

He hit two birdies, one eagle, 11 pars, and four bogies during the tournament to finish with an overall level-par 70 gross

In the ladies’ category, Judith Komugisha from Uganda Golf Club emerged victorious with a score of 75 gross, beating Lilian Koowe who carded 84.

Gilbert Atwooki and David Mugambwa were the best in the seniors’ 66+ category.

The tournament attracted 73 golfers from various clubs in the country and the countrywide tours are expected to traverse all parts of the country in a bid to make golf more accessible and inclusive.

Bernard Baguma, the Tooro Club Captain expressed his gratitude towards the golfers and sponsors for the successful tournament.

"I cannot tell you how happy I am that we got to do this again and very successfully,” Baguma expressed his gratitude.

“Today’s tourney is one that we always look forward to on our calendar and the fact that we got to do it with Venus and Tusker Malt makes it all worthwhile," he added.

The next up on the Tour is Lugazi with the Mehta Open which is expected to take place on March 18 before the Arua City leg for the Arua Open, which is expected in June.
