The tournament which is hosted by Mombasa RFC is set to feature some of the top teams in the circuit.

The second leg of the 2023 SportPesa Sevens Circuit, dubbed Driftwood Sevens, set for Mombasa on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 July has received a Ksh 2 million sponsorship from Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL), through its flagship brand Tusker.

KBL also sponsored the Dala Sevens which kicked off the circuit last weekend at Kisumu’s Jomo Kenyatta Stadium. The first leg saw KCB win the tournament after beating Kenya Cup champions Kabras 17-5 in a final that was held on Sunday, June 2.

On their journey to the final, KCB had beaten the circuit defending champions Menengai Oilers 14-12 in the quarters before dismissing Strathmore Leos 31-0 in the semi-final.

The tournament which is hosted by Mombasa RFC is set to feature some of the top teams in the circuit. Circuit leaders KCB are seeded top and headline Pool A in Division 1 which also has Nakuru RFC, Nondescripts, and Blak Blad while Pool B has Kabras Sugar, Homeboyz, Kisumu RFC, and hosts Mombasa RFC.

Strathmore Leos, third place finishers in Dala Sevens are in Pool C with reigning circuit champions Menengai Oilers, Catholic Monks, and Masinde Muliro while Kenya Harlequin headline Pool D which also comprises defending Driftwood champions Mwamba RFC, Daystar Falcons, and Kabarak University who won the Division Two competition in Kisumu.

Driftwood Sevens Tournament Director Kevin Wambura expressed delight towards receiving the sponsorship and noted that the sponsorship will go a long way towards ensuring they host a successful event.

“Fans can be assured of a fun, and memorable tournament at this year’s Driftwood Sevens tournament. We, therefore, call upon rugby fans to come out in their numbers to cheer on their teams and enjoy themselves.

"Preparations for the tournament are complete and we have confirmed 16 teams for Division One and 24 teams for Division Two,” he added.

On his part, Tusker Brand Manager Lennox Mwalea said that the company was delighted to once again sponsor the tournament.

He said: “Tusker is proud to be a part of the Sevens tradition, providing a great opportunity for us to engage with the Kenyan sporting community. As we eagerly look forward to the Driftwood Sevens this weekend, we have high hopes that the event will live up to its billing as an exhilarating tournament.”

The event after-party, sponsored by Tusker, will be graced by DJ Saye and DJ Perez.
