Kiboijana says the motivation to contest stems from several factors he has observed over the years that need to be corrected.

Phillip Kiboijana has, over the years, been synonymous with being chairman local organizing committee for most rugby tournaments Uganda has hosted, creating a good experience for fans.

The former Kyadondo Rugby Club vice chairman, who has worked closely with the current Rugby Union president Godwin Kayangwe for over a decade, recently shocked many when he announced his interest in challenging his ally for the union’s top seat.

Kiboijana says the motivation to contest stems from several factors he has observed over the years that need to be corrected.

“You know that I have been working with the union for a while, so it opened my eyes to so many things that I think we need to do better,” he told Pulse Sports.

“With my experience and knowledge around the game and administration, which spans over ten years, I felt it was the right time to step in.”

Strengthening the union and club’s administrative structures, commercialization, and youth structure development are some of Kiboijana’s primary objectives when he assumes office.

“I want to strengthen the Union and club structures; we also have a challenge of commercialization where most of the Union’s intellectual properties like national teams are not registered,” he noted.

“A robust youth development structure from the under-age categories to schools is also a key element I am looking at.”

The union has severally had public spats with some clubs and players over several governance issues, and Kiboijana stresses proper accountability will arrest such scenarios.

“The union has not seen the clubs as a valuable partner, which I want to change. We have to work together and be accountable not only financially but also to the stakeholders as well.”

The other elective posts are Vice-presidents – Technical and Commercial, Honourable Secretary, Treasurer, Upcountry Representative, Women’s Representative, and Rugby Development Manager.

The election will be held during URU’s Annual General Meeting in April.
