Ethiopia not only hosted the competition but also clinched the title by defeating United Arabic Republic, a triumph that remains their sole AFCON victory to date.

The upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will be jointly hosted by Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya, following the successful Pamoja Bid presented by these three East African nations, as confirmed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in Cairo, Egypt.

However, this won't mark the debut of the prestigious African football showcase in the CECAFA region.

In 1957, Sudan hosted the first edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, becoming the inaugural country to host AFCON in the CECAFA region.

This tournament hosted in Khartoum was won by African powerhouse Egypt who defeated CECAFA side Ethiopia.

In 1962, as Uganda gained independence, Ethiopia had the honour of hosting the third edition of the tournament, becoming the second country to host AFCON in the CECAFA region.

Ethiopia not only hosted the competition but also clinched the title by defeating United Arabic Republic, a triumph that remains their sole AFCON victory to date.

Ethiopia hosted its second tournament in 1968 which was won by Congo-Kinshasa after beating Ghana for their first AFCON title.

Two years later, Sudan also hosted its second AFCON tournament and they won it on home soil defeating the Black Stars of Ghana.

In 1976, Ethiopia played host once again, welcoming the rest of Africa to Addis Ababa for their third AFCON tournament.

During that year, Morocco, who would later become semi-finalists in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, secured the championship by defeating Guinea, marking their only AFCON victory.

Ethiopia has hosted AFCON thrice and Sudan twice, the only two nations from the CECAFA region to host the prestigious tournament.

Despite being located in North Africa, Sudan is amongst the 12 member states of the CECAFA region.

It's also important to note that Ethiopia, while being a part of the CECAFA group, is also not traditionally considered an East African country.

It is situated in the Horn of Africa, a region that typically includes Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea, and Ethiopia.

East Africa's more traditional members are Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.

As a result, the 2027 AFCON will mark the first time in history that the tournament is hosted in East Africa, specifically in the CECAFA region, after 51 years.
