What looked like a regular pitch-side collision with the goalpost now turns out to have been a potentially life-threatening injury, one that required urgent surgery and immediate hospitalisation.

Awoniyi forced to play on despite obvious injury struggles

During the second half of the match, Awoniyi slammed into the post while chasing down a cross from Anthony Elanga.

After several minutes of treatment, he surprisingly returned to the field, not because he was fully fit, but because Forest had already used all five substitutions.

According to the Daily Mail, medical experts now confirm the injury was so serious it could have been fatal if not addressed quickly.

The striker underwent emergency surgery on Tuesday after scans revealed abdominal trauma. Despite trying to power through, Awoniyi was visibly struggling, unable to move freely while Forest desperately chased a winner against Leicester City.

To make matters worse, the play that led to Awoniyi’s injury came from an offside call, meaning that even if the Nigerian star scored, the goal would have been ruled out.

Elanga, who played in the cross, appeared offside, but officials waited to raise the flag, as per protocol, which allowed play to continue. This resulted in the dangerous sequence that ended with two players crashing into the post.

After the match, Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis was caught in a heated exchange with manager Nuno Espirito Santo, reportedly over concern for Awoniyi’s well-being and the handling of the situation.

Both Nottingham Forest and Nigeria’s Super Eagles will be hoping that the giant attacker makes a swift recovery from his injury, and is back on the pitch very soon.
