Brentford star Neal Maupay had kind words for Alex Iwobi through Frank Onyeka following a cyberbullying case after AFCON 2023.

Brentford striker Neal Maupay demonstrated his class by seeking out Fulham’s Alex Iwobi to check on his welfare following online abuse after Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations final defeat.

Pulse Sports Nigeria reports that Iwobi was cyberbullied moments after Nigeria’s painful 2-1 defeat to Cote d’Ivoire in the final of the AFCON 2023.

“"When did you come back? Yesterday? How is Alex doing?" Maupay asked the Super Eagles defensive midfielder, who replied: "You know, you saw everything. He's good."

Iwobi was targeted by cyberbullies, who were disappointed by the performance of the 27-year-old at the recently concluded AFCON campaign.

The Fulham star featured prominently as Nigeria’s Super Eagles made it to the final in impressive style before falling when it mattered the most against the host nation.

Maupay’s simple gesture showed football’s human touch beyond the tribalism of club allegiances, setting an example by looking out for a fellow professional after Iwobi’s harrowing experience.

Iwobi’s international teammate and compatriot, Onyeka, gave a nod of appreciation before they unpacked the situation in a short, poignant exchange.

Moments like this reveal character in adversity, with Maupay emerging as a leader, transcending rivalries to display emotional intelligence and solidarity.

With hate rising online, football must unite against discrimination and Maupay’s thoughtful words and gesture highlight compassion beneath the competition.
