Ahead of their Stamford Bridge meeting, Arne Slot has expressed his surprise at the 22-point gulf separating his Liverpool side from Enzo Maresca's Chelsea.

Arne Slot has revealed his surprise about the current gap between Premier League champions Liverpool and Chelsea.

Both teams face off at Stamford Bridge on Sunday in the Reds’ first match since claiming a second Premier League crown and 20th English top-flight title, with Enzo Maresca’s men expected to give the champions a guard of honour.

Slot’s men claimed the reverse fixture 2-1 at Anfield, an encounter that many felt highlighted Chelsea’s title aspirations.

However, the London club have since fallen off alarmingly, as evidenced by the 22-point difference between the clubs.

“It's the end of the season but we also have to look at this as the start of next season already. It's Chelsea away first,” said Slot.

“We played them earlier on in the season and I'm completely surprised, not shocked but surprised, if I look at the gap we have with them at the moment, because at that moment in time they were the better team on the pitch.

“But we found a way to win and that is a quality that we didn't need a lot because mostly we were the better team on the pitch.

“But in the game we had to suffer more than any other game maybe. So to be so many points ahead of them is a big compliment for everyone here at this club.”

What’s next for Liverpool and Chelsea

Maresca’s men enter Sunday’s match keen to record three consecutive Premier League wins to strengthen their hold on fifth spot after Nottingham Forest’s 2-0 loss to Brentford on Thursday.

Success for the Blues would take them three points clear of Forest, who travel to FA Cup finalists Crystal Palace on Monday night.

As for Liverpool, their quest to hit at least 90 points begins at the Bridge, with further games against Arsenal, Brighton and Palace.
