A controversial VAR decision permitted Bournemouth's second goal to stand against Arsenal, despite the Gunners' claims of handball.

The Premier League have issued a brief statement clarifying the Video Assistant Referee's decision to allow Bournemouth's second goal in their 2-1 victory against Arsenal

Mikel Arteta’s team took an early lead through a first-half goal from Declan Rice, but the Cherries fought back to secure a surprise victory.

Bournemouth's equaliser was scored by Dean Huijsen, and was followed by a second goal for the visitors, netted by Evanilson.

Arsenal players protested that the striker had handled the ball in the build-up to the goal, prompting a VAR review.

However, the on-field decision of a goal was upheld after the check.

The Premier League explained that the VAR review found no conclusive evidence to suggest that Evanilson had handled the ball before scoring. This meant the referee's original decision stood, much to the frustration of Arsenal.

“The referee’s call of goal was checked and confirmed by VAR – with no conclusive evidence that Evanilson handled the ball before scoring,” read a post on X, formerly Twitter.

The goal proved to be the decisive moment in the match, with Arsenal suffering a surprise defeat.

Saturday’s result is a further blow for Gunners boss Arteta, particularly after Liverpool were crowned Premier League champions, their midweek Champions League defeat and second place now in doubt, considering Manchester City and Newcastle United’s positive runs.

What’s next for Arsenal?

Arsenal travel to PSG next Wednesday, seeking to turn around the 1-0 deficit to advance to their first Champions League final since 2006.
