Ayunga impressed but could not help St.Mirren beat Rangers in a high-stakes Scottish Premier League encounter.

Kenyan striker Jonah Ayunga impressed over a 64-minute spell on the pitch but could not help St.Mirren avoid a 1-0 defeat to title-chasing Rangers in a Scottish Premier League encounter on Saturday afternoon.

Ayunga, who has scored two goals since returning to full fitness having recovered from a nasty knee injury in December, led the line impressively.

He completed two out of five attempted take-ons and gave one key pass underpinning his willingness to also make things happen despite being the one expected to get on the end of chances.

Cyriel Dessers' scored his third goal in three games to ensure the Glasgow-based outfit edged out St. Mirren to move two points behind Scottish Premiership leaders Celtic.

Dessey opened the scoring after meeting John Lundstram's searching ball over the top before slotting the ball past Zach Hemming's net.

The hosts did have a couple of chances to restore parity through Kwon Hyeok-kyu, Elvis Bwomono, and Lewis Jamieson, but none of their attempts found the target, leaving Rangers to take a 1-0 lead into the break.

Rangers looked more assured after the break and Dessers was denied the chance to score his 13th goal of the seasonby hitting the post after  Tom Lawrence had drilled just wide.

St Mirren did not create alot of chances in this half, with the only attempt coming when Alex Gogic's late close-range shot was crucially blocked by  John Souttar before Luke Bolton headed the ball against the bar from the corner.

A fourth league defeat in five games leaves the Paisley club fifth in the table and Rangers could find themselves five points adrift of Celtic again if the leaders beat Ross County later on Saturday

Both sides return to action next Saturday as Rangers host Livingston while St Mirren go to Hibernian.
