Harry Maguire has reassured his mother that she shouldn't be concerned about him insisting he can take the abuse.

After England defeated Scotland 3-1 at Hampden Field last month, Maguire received scathing jeers from the crowd due to an own goal.

His mother Zoe criticised the abuse her son had endured from certain supporters and commentators on Instagram, calling it "disgraceful and absolutely wrong."

The England defender has now spoken about his mother being scared and how he assured her that he can handle the abuse.

Maguire reflected on the situation and said as reported by the Sun, “She was in the stands during the Scotland game and probably felt affected by it and annoyed by it.

"She’s more worried for me — but I did reiterate to her that I am all good and strong mentally and I can deal with it.

"It probably affects my family more than myself as they worry how I’m dealing with it. I just tell her all the time that I’m good.”

The treatment Maguire received from Scotland was a new low at a very trying time for the centre-back, who has slipped down the Old Trafford food chain and was relieved of his captaincy by manager Erik ten Hag.

Given his limited playing time, many ask why Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate has been selecting him.

Despite all the abuse, the England international has kept his head up and has kept his focus on improving and proving his doubters wrong.
