The Gor Mahia midfielder has been included in new coach Paul Put’s team for the qualifiers against Guinea and Somalia but he will hope to have recovered from his injury by then.

Gor Mahia midfielder Rogers Mugisha has been named in the Uganda Cranes provisional squad for their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Guinea and Somalia this month.

Uganda new coach Paul Put wasted no time following his appointment two days ago as he unveiled a squad of 36 for the two encounters which will be played on November 17 and 21.

Mugisha is among local and foreign-based players who made the squad that also has former Gor Mahia midfielder Khalid Aucho, who currently plays for Tanzania champions Yanga, Abdu Aziizi Kayondo and Ibrahim Juma, who both play for Spanish side Leganes, Motherwell defender Bevis Kristofer Mugabi and goalkeeper Salim Omar Magoola of South African club Richards Bay.

It is not known, however, if Mugisha will be fit to play by the time the qualifiers begin, having suffered a hamstring injury during Gor Mahia’s match against Bidco United last weekend.

“Rogers looks like a hamstring, we will have that assessed and we send the boy our best of wishes but hopefully it won’t be too long,” Gor Mahia head coach Johnathan McKinstry said of the midfielder’s injury.

Uganda are in Group G alongside Algeria, Somalia, Guinea, Botswana, and Mozambique and their two opening qualifiers will both be played in Morocco with the Cranes being the visiting team.

The final team will travel to Berkene, Morocco on Sunday 12 November before taking on Guinea five days later with the clash against Somalia coming on Tuesday 21 November.

After narrowly missing out on the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Uganda parted ways with Serbian coach Milutin Sredojevic, popularly known as Micho, and replaced him with Put this week.

However, Put’s appointment has not been received warmly by a section of fans in Uganda, adding pressure to his role as he will need to start positively to win them over.
