Kenyan striker Jonah Ayunga came close to scoring his second goal of the season but had it chopped off as St Mirren’s dreadful run in the Scottish Premiership continued on Wednesday

Kenyan striker Jonah Ayunga came close to scoring his second goal of the season but saw his strike ruled out as St Mirren suffered back-to-back defeats following a 1-0 loss to Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership on Wednesday.

Ayunga, who recently returned from a long injury lay-off, started upfront in a two-man attack alongside Toyosi Olusanya, and thought he had given his side a 14th minute lead when he struck the ball in the net.

The forward reacted quickest to Will Dennis' save from Olusanya's strike, but the offside flag was raised. A VAR check confirmed that Olusanya was narrowly offside in the build up to the goal.

That was the only attack of note for the home side as the visitors took the lead when Marley Watkins fired them ahead on 25 minutes.

The Killie forward peeled away from the Saints defence and slammed high into the net after being slipped in by Matthew Kennedy.

Ayunga lasted 75 minutes on the pitch before Stav Nahmani replaced him and the substitute wasn't far away from making a quick impact when he found himself in good space inside the box. He twisted to try and get the shot away but his attempt was well blocked by Corrie Ndaba.

Defeat extends St Mirren’s winless run to three games and it was the second in a row after a 2-0 defeat to Hearts last Saturday.

Steve Robinson’s men have now won just one of their last seven matches, piling pressure on the tactician whose side lie fifth on the 12-team table on 26 points, 22 behind leaders Celtic.

What is more worrying is that they have only scored two goals in their last seven matches, the 2-0 win over Ross County on December 9, with fans already calling for changes in the attack.

It does not get any better for St Mirren who visit Aberdeen on Saturday before hosting champions Celtic next Tuesday.
