Lookman returns after injury scare and scores as Atalanta confirm UCL ticket with Roma win

Atalanta claimed a narrow victory over AS Roma on Monday night and sealed a ticket to next season's UEFA Champions League.

Following Atalanta’s disappointment of losing ground in the race for the Serie A title, the Italian side still needed to maintain their third position and qualify for the UCL.

They claimed the ticket with a 2-1 win over their rivals, Roma, who are also fighting for the Champions League ticket.

As it happened

Ademola Lookman made the starting lineup after earlier reports that he was a doubt for the game following an injury he sustained in their 4-0 win over Monza last weekend.

His inclusion in the starting eleven paid off for Atalanta as the Super Eagles star got the opening goal of the game from a first-time shot after receiving a nice pass from Charles De Ketelaere.

However, Atalanta were pegged back before the half-time break after Bryan Cristante got onto a deflected cross to head the ball into the net.

In the second half, AS Roma got a penalty after a supposed foul in the box, but the VAR checked and cleared the incident, reversing the referee’s penalty decision.

Ibrahim Sulemana gave the host the lead late in the game after getting at the end of a shot that rebounded towards his path.

Atalanta held on to their narrow lead until the final whistle, with the win sealing their ticket to next season's UCL tournament.
