Former Manchester City captain David Silva is set to retire from football after suffering a serious knee injury

Manchester City legend David Silva, who is currently contracted to Real Sociedad in La Liga, is set to call time on his football career after rupturing his ACL in a pre-season friendly with La Real.

David Silva suffers agonising knee injury

Silva joined Real Sociedad from Manchester City in 2020 after more than 400 appearances for the Cityzens and has starred in LaLiga for three seasons since leaving the Premier League.

The 37-year-old midfielder was supposed to enter his fourth season with Real Sociedad, but his plans have been completely altered after he suffered a serious injury during pre-season.

During a Real Sociedad training session, Silva felt discomfort in his knee, and following tests, it was revealed that he had ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament, potentially ruling him out for the entire 2023/24 season.

The Spanish midfielder has reportedly reacted to the injury by deciding to retire from football entirely, putting an end to a hugely successful 20-year career.

According to the Spanish publication Relevo, Silva has been forced into an earlier-than-planned retirement due to the nature of the injury and the difficulty of recovery, especially given Silva’s advanced age.

The former Manchester City captain becomes the third Real Sociedad player in three seasons to suffer a long-term injury, following similar setbacks for Mikel Oyarzabal and Super Eagles forward Umar Sadiq, who missed the majority of the 2022/23 season.

Silva will retire as a massively decorated star after winning the World Cup and two European Championships with Spain, four Premier League titles with Manchester City, and Copa del Rey titles with Valencia and Real Sociedad.
