Manchester City’s UEFA Champions League hopes took a hit as they were held to a 0-0 draw by already-relegated Southampton.
Southampton, already relegated, had nothing to play for, but they were resolute for 90 minutes and earned a well-deserved point.
The game started as one would expect with Pep Guardiola’s men camped firmly in the Saints’ half for most of the opening stages, but they were so blunt in the final third that 30 minutes had passed before they fired an effort towards Aaron Ramsdale’s goal.
Even then it was from a free-kick, as Kevin De Bruyne’s 20-yard strike whistled narrowly over the crossbar.

The second half was more of the same, and even the introduction of Jeremy Doku failed to inspire.
Phil Foden had a late opportunity that sailed wide and in the end, City will view this as two points lost, rather than a point gained against the worst team in the division.
