Hours after a heated on-pitch exchange with Nuno Espirito Santo, Evangelos Marinakis released a statement attributing his outburst to frustration over Taiwo Awoniyi’s injury incident.

Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis has issued a statement expressing his pride in the club securing European football, just hours after being seen in a heated on-pitch discussion with manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

Forest's hopes of Champions League qualification were dented by a 2-2 draw against Leicester City at the City Ground on Sunday.

Chris Wood's goal had put them ahead against the Foxes after Morgan Gibbs-White cancelled out Conor Coady's opener, but a late equaliser meant Marinakis confronted Nuno Espirito Santo on the pitch after the final whistle, appearing visibly angry.

Despite a strong start to the season, recent results have seen them slip to seventh in the league.

However, the draw did guarantee European football for Forest next season, a feat they last achieved 30 years ago.

Marinakis on apparent Nuno spat

Later on Sunday, Marinakis released a statement on Instagram celebrating the club's European qualification.

The Forest supremo then explained that his outburst was due to frustration over the decision not to substitute an injured Taiwo Awoniyi in the closing stages of the game.

"Today is a day for celebration because after 30 years Nottingham Forest is guaranteed to be competing on the European stage once again,” read Marinakis’ Instagram statement, “A promise I made to our supporters when we achieved promotion!

"With two more games to go in the Premier League, we must keep believing and keep dreaming, right to the final kick of the game.

"We are extremely proud of and close to Nuno and the team, and we must celebrate the historic achievements of this season.

"Everybody - coaching staff, players, supporters and including myself - we were frustrated around the injury of Taiwo and the medical staff's misjudgement on Taiwo's ability to continue the game.

"This is natural, this is a demonstration of the passion we feel for our club. Let’s all be grateful, passionate and keep on dreaming!”

Sunday's draw leaves the Tricky Trees seventh in the Premier League table with two games remaining.

What’s next for Nottingham Forest?
