Mamelodi Sundowns continued their perfect start to their Dstv Premiership season with a narrow win over rivals Orlando Pirates on Wednesday.

Masandawana secured the slim 1-0 win at the Orlando Stadium with Lucas Ribeiro scoring from 12 yards in the 12th minute after Sundowns captain Themba Zwane was brought down within the box by Siphelo Baloni.

The win was Sundowns' seventh in as many games, extending their lead at the summit to seven points from second-placed Isma Watenga's Golden Arrows.

Former Cranes captain Denis Onyango made the bench but didn't feature in the game.

The win also equalled a league record set by traditional giants Kaizer Chiefs, which is going 31 games without defeat.

Rulani Mokwena's side, who last lost a league game in September 2022 against SuperSport United, have now picked up 25 wins and six draws, equaling Chiefs' run from 2005, who went unbeaten between 15th January 2005 and 16th November 2005, picking up 15 wins and 16 draws.

The Brazilians, chasing an unprecedented seventh straight league title, are also set to feature in the newly formed CAF African Football League.

The tournament, which has attracted the top eight clubs from different regions across the African continent, will see Sundowns face Angola's Petro Atletico in one of four quarter-finals, which will be played on a home and away basis.

The other fixtures will see Simba face Al Ahly, Enyimba take on Wydad Casablanca, and TP Mazembe take on Esperance.
