CAF President Patrice Motsepe's frequent attendance at Bafana Bafana games sparks debate over potential influence on referees and match outcomes.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) President, Patrice Motsepe, has become the center of a heated debate due to his consistent presence at South Africa games during the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

According to Moroccan website SATV, Motsepe’s unwavering attendance at Bafana Bafana matches in the tournament has stirred a mix of criticism and commendation.

Critics argue that the 62-year-old's presence could unduly influence the decisions of on-field referees and VAR officials, potentially skewing the outcomes in favor of Bafana Bafana.

An anonymous sports analyst commented, “While it’s not unusual for a CAF President to show support for their home team, the consistency and timing of Motsepe’s appearances have raised eyebrows. It’s crucial that the sanctity of the game is maintained, and any form of undue influence, whether real or perceived, must be addressed.”

On the flip side, Al Arab newspaper lauded Motsepe for his commitment to attending the matches.

The publication noted that while it was customary for previous CAF presidents to attend one match per day, Motsepe has gone above and beyond, thanks to his use of a private jet which allows him to travel to multiple games within a short timeframe.

The controversy takes on additional significance as Bafana Bafana prepares to face Nigeria in the semi-finals of the tournament on Wednesday at 8 pm East Africa Time (EAT).

In contrast, the day’s other knockout game, featuring host nation Ivory Coast against DR Congo, scheduled for 11 pm EAT, will also be closely watched, though it remains unclear if Motsepe will be present.
