FKFPL Sam Okoth on why he remains at Shabana despite tendering resignation

Okoth has appeared to hint that Shabana officials are keeping him in charge of the club against his will.

Shabana FC head coach Sam Okoth revealed that the club's management declined his resignation after his charges lost 4-0 to Ulinzi Stars at the Ulinzi Sports Complex on Sunday.

Tore Bobe again lost 1-0 to Gor Mahia on Wednesday courtesy of a goal by Rooney Onyango to put K'Ogalo level on points with Posta Rangers, who do have a game in hand against Kakamega Homeboyz to be played on Thursday afternoon.

Okoth has hinted several times about his intention to step down from his role as head coach. Against Kariobangi Sharks, he hinted at stepping down as he was frustrated at the rate his side kept conceding late goals.

Against Ulinzi Stars last Sunday, he said he would be handing over his resignation letter after overseeing “the worst defeat” of his career.

However, the management insisted that he was misquoted and that he would be going nowhere, and as a result, it was not surprising to see him in the dugout against Gor Mahia on Wednesday.

Okoth has hinted that he is being kept at the club against his will, but chose to keep his cards close to his chest.

“I think when I said I would be resigning, there are some protocols that have to be observed. There has to be a way taken because this team has a management, there are officials who run it,” Okoth told the press after the match.

“When I give my opinions and explain them concisely to them, they are the ones who make the final decision.”

This did not deter the battery of journalists interviewing him from persisting with the question, to which he responded: “Ask me about the game. It brought me here today, about other things, ask the management, they will answer you.”

Meanwhile, Okoth was quick to slam the standard of officiating for his side’s defeat to the defending league champions, claiming his boys had done well until the referee dished out cards.

Shabana were reduced to ten men in the 79th minute when defender Aduda Abisolom was given his marching orders for pulling back a Gor Mahia attacker Christopher Ochieng after a confrontation between the two players.

“After losing last time out against  Ulinzi, I think my boys bounced back strong,” Okoth said. “It has been a good game to watch and if you watch how Gor played, we set up to mitigate them as we knew how they were playing.

“Tactically my boys were good but when the referee started flashing yellow cards, that is when we started to see his intentions for today’s game, but after the red card, they got a chance to score.”

It remains interesting to see the developments that will take place in the Shabana camp over the next few days.
