Spain World Cup hero speaks out after father’s death

Olga Carmona has spoken out after learning of the death of her father following Spain's World Cup win

Spain’s World Cup hero Olga Carmona has spoken publicly for the first time since learning of her father’s passing after the final of the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Carmona, who was captain for the day, scored La Roja’s winning goal against England in the 1-0 triumph to lift the country’s first-ever Women’s World Cup win but received terrible news after the match, with the RFEF informing her that her father had died.

After taking a moment to grieve, the Real Madrid player has spoken about her deep loss, posting a message on social media. 

She released a statement saying, “And without knowing it, I had my Star before the game started. I know that you have given me the strength to achieve something unique. I know that you have been watching me tonight and that you are proud of me. Rest in peace, dad.” 

Carmona receives condolences 

The death of Carmona’s father was also announced on social media platform X, by the Spanish FA’s official handle, which sent out a post, saying, “The RFEF deeply regrets to report the death of Olga Carmona's father. The soccer player learned the sad news after the World Cup final.

"We send our most sincere hugs to Olga and her family in a moment of deep pain. We love you, Olga, you are the history of Spanish football."

Carmona has received condolences from FIFA, Manchester City defender, Aymeric Laporte, and fellow World Cup final goalscorer Andres Iniesta.
