The NFF has reportedly told Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro to take a pay cut or leave.

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has reportedly issued an ultimatum to Nigerian men's national team coach Jose Peseiro to take a pay cut.

The 63-year-old Portuguese coach took the Super Eagles job in May last year after Nigeria failed to qualify for the World Cup.

After nine games in the role, with four wins and five defeats, he has managed to qualify Nigeria for the African Cup of Nations tournament in Ivory Coast next year.

His contract, however, expired at the end of July, but according to reports, he is staying in the role due to his love for the job.

What happened

According to reports, the NFF has issued a condition to the former Porto coach before signing him to a new deal.

The chairman of the Technical and Development Committee of the NFF, Alhaji Sheriff Rabiu Inuwa, is said to have disclosed that the federation issued Peseiro a three-day ultimatum to accept a pay cut.

Peseiro's initial contract had him earning $70,000 monthly, and he reportedly pays his staff from it.

The NFF, however, have explained that they can no longer afford to pay that much, and if he refuses to take a pay cut, they will end their relationship with him.

“The Technical Committee has given him [Peseiro] three days to respond to our proposed pay cut or we disengage him finally,” Alhaji Sherrif said, according to Complete Sports.

“We will allow him to continue if he accepts a reduction in his 70,000 USD monthly salary and other conditions of service.

“If he turns down our proposal, we will consider appointing a coach to oversee the dead rubber game against Sao Tome and Principe in Uyo, then we start to search for a new substantive coach that the NFF can afford to pay his salary. ”
