Taiwo Awoniyi underwent emergency surgery on Monday night, according to reports coming out of England, though the situation is not life-threatening.
Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi underwent urgent surgery on Monday night after suffering a serious abdominal injury during the Premier League match against Leicester City on Sunday.
What happened?
The incident occurred late in the game at the City Ground, as the Nigeria international collided heavily with the goalpost during the 2-2 draw with their East Midlands rivals.
As reported by The Guardian, the surgery was deemed necessary to address the specific nature of the injury, although it is understood that the striker's condition is not life-threatening.
Despite receiving several minutes of on-field treatment, Awoniyi attempted to continue playing; however, the full extent of the injury was discovered following a thorough assessment by the Forest medical team on Monday.

The incident involving Awoniyi's injury was reportedly a significant source of frustration for the club's owner, Evangelos Marinakis.
Following the final whistle, Marinakis entered the pitch and confronted the manager, Nuno Espírito Santo, expressing his displeasure that a substitution was not made.
The Forest owner later clarified the situation on social media.
)
"Everybody - coaching staff, players, supporters and including myself - we were frustrated around the injury of Taiwo and the medical staff's misjudgement on Taiwo's ability to continue the game,” Marinakis wrote on Instagram.
"This is natural, this is a demonstration of the passion we feel for our club."
At the time of the collision, Awoniyi had returned to the field but was visibly struggling to move freely as Nottingham Forest desperately chased a late winning goal, crucial for their aspirations of qualifying for the Champions League.
The Nigerian has been unable to build on year one at Forest, when he netted 10 Premier League goals in 27 appearances.

Awoniyi has since played second fiddle to Chris Wood, with the New Zealand forward Espirito Santo's preferred choice up top, scoring six times in 20 league appearances last term and once in 24 matches in 2024-25.
What’s next for Forest?
Although Forest are assured of at least Conference League football next season, the Tricky Trees could still play in the Champions League, though they must win their final two games away at West Ham United and on home soil against Chelsea on the final day to have a shot at ending in the top five.
