The combative midfielder, who has played a pivotal role for the green and yellow side this season, won’t be available for selection in both legs of the interclub final due to suspension.

Uganda Cranes assistant captain Khalid Aucho is set to miss Young Africans’ two-legged CAF Confederations Cup final against Algeria’s USM Algers.

The combative midfielder, who has played a pivotal role for the green and yellow side this season, won’t be available for selection in both legs of the interclub final due to suspension.

“Aucho will not be able to play both games of the CAF Confederations Cup final due to suspension; it’s very unfortunate, but that’s the situation”, read a club statement.

The Suspension

Aucho featured in five group games of the CAF Confederations Cup and was booked twice; he then picked up three straight bookings, one in the quarter-final second leg against Rivers United and two in the semifinals, home and away against Marumo Gallants.

What do the CAF rules say?

According to the CAF Confederations Cup regulations via www.cafonline.com, page 16, rule number VII (7) titled disciplinary measures, CAF spells out the suspensions as explained below.

1. A player who receives three cautions shall be automatically suspended from playing the subsequent match in CAF inter-club competitions. The Secretariat shall communicate this automatic suspension to the concerned associations.

2. If the same player accumulates, later on in the same competition, three more cautions in three different matches or is sent off, then the second sanction will be doubled, and the player will be suspended for two subsequent matches.

3. At the end of the group matches, the cautions that do not lead to a suspension are cancelled.

‘Tiimu ya Wanainchi’ will host the first leg on 28th May 2023, with the return leg set to take place on 3rd June in Algeria. Both teams are playing the final for the first time ever.

Aucho, who is part of the summoned Uganda Cranes squad set to prepare for the Algeria AFCON qualifier, will now only feature in the Azam Sports Federation Cup final against Azam FC and the last two league games of the season.
