AFC Leopards attacker Ronald Sichenje believes Gor Mahia have more to lose in the next Mashemeji Derby clash between both outfits following the latest postponement last weekend.
AFC Leopards attacker Ronald Sichenje has stoked the flames ahead of the highly anticipated Mashemeji Derby, insisting that eternal rivals Gor Mahia will enter the rescheduled clash with far more to lose.
Sichenje, who is dubbed ‘Bebeto’ in local football circles, was on song during the side’s most recent clash against Mathare United, where he scored the side’s third goal as they sailed to a 3-1 win over the Slum Boys.
Leopards clearly took advantage of an extra day of rest, with the 97th Mashemeji Derby postponed due to lack of sufficient-enough facilities to be able to host the match. The game was supposed to be held at Kasarani Stadium, but the Confederation of African Football (CAF) rendered it unusable.

Sichenje: I want to score more goals

Speaking after the match, Sichenje, who is the brother to Harambee Stars defender Collins Sichenje, expressed satisfaction at having netted the goal to help his side win the clash.
“I just wanted to score because it was a one v one situation and there was no one else there to support me, so I had to do it,” Sichenje said, after he managed to outmuscle Fidel Otieno before unleashing a left-footed shot into the back of the net.
With Leopards only having four games remaining until the league winds up, Sichenje has revealed a burning motivation to add to his goal tally and help Leopards finish in as high a position as possible.

Benni McCarthy: Fresh Update on Harambee Stars Coach’s Future Amid Links to South African Giants
Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy has been linked to jobs back home in South Africa in recent days and there is a new update regarding his future in Kenya.
“It gives me motivation to want to score more goals. If I keep doing what I am doing, then the sky is the limit.”
“ I want to score and assist in each of the remaining three games, and we hope we can get wins.”
Asked about whether the derby being postponed played to their advantage, Sichenje was of agreement, but also did send a stern warning to Gor Mahia to come prepared when the new date for the rescheduled fixture is announced.
“We were prepared because the derby is just like another match to us. We had nothing to lose for this one but we were prepared for any scenario. They fear us, we do not fear them because they are the ones who need the points more.”
Beyond club ambitions, Sichenje is eyeing a much bigger price: impressing Benni McCarthy and earn a national team call-up —especially with Kenya set to co-host both the CECAFA and the 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN) tournaments.

As the FKFPL season winds down, and with the Mashemeji Derby set to be rescheduled, Sichenje’s words are likely to echo loudly in the Gor Mahia camp. The message from the Leopards’ dressing room is clear: they’re coming in fearless—and with fire in their boots.
