As Aucho’s teammates prepared to start training at Avic Town, the club’s training base, the combative midfielder was summoned by then-head coach Nabi Nasreddine who broke the bad news, informing him that CAF had ruled him out of both games.

The morning of May 25th will forever remain etched in Khalid Aucho’s mind. At the time, Young Africans were preparing for the crunch two-legged CAF Confederation Cup final against Algeria’s USM Alger, the first leg was set to be at the Benjamin Mkapa in Dar-es-Salaam.

As Aucho’s teammates prepared to start training at Avic Town, the club’s training base, the combative midfielder was summoned by then-head coach Nabi Nasreddine who broke the bad news, informing him that CAF had ruled him out of both games.

“Coach (Nabi) called me and told me it was so tough because I had pumped myself up for the games,” Aucho told Pulse Sports.

“That is the lowest point in my football career. Initially, it was only the first leg, but that wasn’t the case.”

“So I took it in any way; the club president Hersi Said also passed by and encouraged me.”

“That’s how the club decided that I will be part of the team all through, and I am grateful for it.”

The Algeria Drama

Young Africans lost 2-1 in the first leg in Dar-es-Salaam and needed to score twice away in Algiers to win the trophy but only managed a 1-0 win.

Even after goalkeeper Djigui Diarra saved a penalty in the second half; USM Alger won on the away goals rule.

Like club president Hersi Said, Aucho also described the atmosphere in Algiers as tough and rough before and during the game.

“In Algeria, it was rough; they (USM Alger) did what they had to do to win the cup, the lasers, game interruptions because of the smoke bombs; it was tough, but the players gave everything, so proud of them.”

The Aucho – Musonda Bromance

Khalid Aucho has always carried a reserved persona. Still, it’s different at Young Africans because of Zambian forward Kennedy Musonda, with whom they have struck a friendship that goes beyond the pitch.

“Musonda is my crazy best friend on the team; when he joined, he needed someone he could guide and help him in English.”

“And I was there to do it; as you know, there is a lot of Kiswahili in the dressing room,” Aucho noted.
