Harambee Stars will be without defender Danie Anyembe for their friendly match against Russia while winger Ayub Timbe is doubtful for the clash set to take place in Turkey on Monday.

Anyembe, who has impressed at right-back in recent matches for Kenya, could not secure a release from his club Viborg in time to link up with Engin Firat’s men in Turkey.

The 25-year-old Danish-born defender was used to good effect during Kenya’s friendly matches against Qatar and South Sudan in September and it was hoped that he would slot in again for the meeting with the European side.

Right-back has been a problematic position for Kenya down the years with many defenders trying without success to make their position their own. Anyembe’s absence means Firat will have to shuffle his pack at the back for the match.

While confirming the defender’s absence, Football Kenya Federation also said Timbe will need to pass a late fitness test before he can be allowed to play.

“Timbe had a swollen ankle in camp, and will wait to pass a late fitness test to determine whether he could make the starting team, or at least the matchday squad,” FKF said on its website.

Kenya are gearing up for a first meeting with Russia who are unbeaten this year despite being suspended from international competitions due to the war in Ukraine.

They beat Cameroon 1-0 last Thursday, meaning Firat’s men have their work cut out.

Kenya beat Qatar 2-1 before losing 1-0 to South Sudan in September, and they are hoping to pick up valuable lessons from the game, ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers which begin in November.
