On 6th February 2022, Senegal achieved their maiden Africa Cup of Nations trophy.

The 6th of February holds a special place in the hearts of Senegal's football fans, marking the first anniversary of their country's triumphant victory in the Africa Cup of Nations.

It was on this day that Sadio Mané wrote history by delivering an unstoppable penalty that clinched a nail-biting shootout win against the formidable seven-time champions Egypt at Yaoundé's Olembé Stadium.

Reflecting on that fateful evening in the Cameroonian capital it is hard to forget the palpable tension that gripped the Olembé Stadium.

The match saw both teams locked in a goalless stalemate after 120 minutes. Mané had missed a penalty in normal time only to emerge as the savior in the shootout.

The final was not just a battle between two teams but a clash of footballing titans.

Egypt's star Mohamed Salah, a teammate of Mané's at Liverpool at the time found himself overshadowed by the defensive mastery of Senegal.

In a twist of fate, Salah did not get the chance to take his penalty, as his compatriots faltered under the intense pressure.

Mohamed Abdelmonem's miss and Mohanad Lasheen's effort saved by Senegal's goalkeeper Edouard Mendy set the stage for Mané's triumphant moment.

The match was not without its drama from the onset as just minutes into the game Egyptian defender Abdelmonem's cynical challenge on Saliou Ciss led to a penalty which Mané failed to convert thanks to the heroics of Egyptian goalkeeper Mohamed Gabaski.

This initial setback, however, did not deter the Lions of Teranga. Senegal dominated large swathes of the game with Ismaila Sarr wreaking havoc on the right wing and creating numerous scoring opportunities.

Despite Senegal's dominance, the Egyptian defense managed to keep the game level. The Pharaohs, with Salah leading their charge, also had open chances in the match but Senegal's goalkeeper Mendy was equal to the task making some crucial saves.

As the game progressed into extra time and eventually penalties, the weight of history could be felt. Senegal was on the cusp of their first-ever AFCON title, a feat that had eluded them in previous attempts.

The penalty shootout was a nerve-wracking affair, but when Mané stepped up for the decisive kick, there was a sense of destiny about it.

In the aftermath of the victory, the celebrations were not just confined to the Olembé Stadium or the streets of Dakar as it was a victory celebrated across Africa and by football fans worldwide.
