Premier Soccer League's most successful and decorated player, Denis Onyango, has conceded that he lost his first-choice goalkeeper position on merit to Ronwen Williams at Mamelodi Sundowns.

Premier Soccer League's most successful and decorated player, Denis Onyango, has conceded that he lost his first-choice goalkeeper position on merit to Ronwen Williams at Mamelodi Sundowns.

Onyango has seen it in the PSL, and at the age of 38, the Ugandan is more of a look-upto figure at the club, given his level of experience, leadership and success.

"Williams is incredible, and all the qualities he has as a person and personality are great," Goal.com quoted Onyango praising the South African goalkeeper.

"He came through and competed and did well to earn his place in the team."

During the 2015/16 season, the former Uganda Cranes captain was on top of his game, notching 16 clean sheets in the PLS.

And during the 2022/23 campaign, Willams broke that record after he managed 18 clean sheets in the league.

"Ronwen has shown that he is a quality goalkeeper, 18 clean sheets is massive. The best I did was 16, and what he did was incredible," he added.

Williams was nominated for the goalkeeper of the season award alongside Onyango's compatriot Salim Jamal of Richards Bay and SuperSport United's Ricardo Goss.

He is also nominated for the PSL Footballer of the Season and Players' Player of the Season.

"All those nominations show that the club signed a good quality goalkeeper," Onyango climaxed.

Onyango was in goal during a one-all draw against Maritzburg United on Tuesday as Masandawana lifted their sixth straight league title.

But he is expected to drop back on the bench and Williams to start in a crucial CAF Champions League semifinal second leg against Wydad Casablanca in South Africa on Saturday.

The two African powerhouses drew goalless in Morocco last weekend, and it will be all to play for in Pretoria.
