Ajax reached record lows as they they were embarrassed by fierce rivals PSV and remain bottm of the Eredivisie standings after eight games of the new season

Ajax’ terrible start to the 2023/24 Eredivisie season continued as the former league champions were humiliated by rivals PSV in a shocking 5-2 demolition.

De Joden were ripped apart by PSV, who recorded their 10th consecutive win in the league to maintain the top spot in the Eredivisie standings.

Ajax scored first through Branco van den Boomen, but a hat-trick from Mexican star Hirving Lozano and goals from Luuk de Jong and Ismael Saibari condemned the visitors to a humbling defeat to worsen their situation in the league this season.

How it happened

Ajax had lost their previous four Eredivisie games before the crucial encounter against PSV and were in danger of breaking an all-time league record with another loss to their fierce rivals.

Taking this into account, the visitors started on the front foot and took a shock lead inside the opening 10 minutes through van den Boomen’s effort from outside the area.

PSV wasted no time in pulling level, as Lozano scored just 10 minutes later with a brilliant finish to make it 1-1.

However, Ajax would go in front again and eventually went into the half-time break with the lead after forward Bryan Brobbey’s superb finish on 40 minutes to make it 2-1 to the visitors.

Ajax were the better team in the opening period and showed glimpses of their old selves with their first-half performance, but reverted to the recent type with a horrendous showing after the break.

Whatever interim manager Hedwiges Maduro told his Ajax side during the interval, it backfired spectacularly, as they conceded a goal after just four minutes of the restart to surrender their lead.

From then on, it was a slaughter, as PSV scored three more goals to end the game with a 5-2 advantage that was earned after a blistering second 45 minutes against Ajax.

Ajax’s record fifth loss in a row in the Eredivisie leaves them dead last on the standings with only five points from their opening eight matches, while PSV continue to cruise at the top of the table with 30 points.
