UFL: Season kickoff fast approaching despite delay

The 2023 University Football league is set to kick off for its 11th season after ten successful editions.

The league, which has gradually grown since its inception in 2012 with six teams, is expected to feature 24 teams in this year's edition.

The league was initially scheduled to kick off on March 7th 2023. Still, the start of the season has been delayed to allow all the teams to get proper registration ahead of the tournament, according to league manager Anthony Tumwesigye.

"There shouldn't be worries regarding the start of the season," Tumwesigye told Pulse Sports before adding.

"We extended the start to allow teams to get all their preparations in check, including registration ahead of the tournament."

The draws for the group stage were held a few weeks back, with the 24 teams seeded and placed into six groups.

There was a twist, though, as the teams from "up country" were placed in the same pot to avoid travelling for long distances.

The league was initially scheduled to kick off on March 7th 2023. Still, the start of the season has been delayed to allow all the teams to get proper registration ahead of the tournament, according to Anthony Tumwesigye.

The fixtures, times and venues are expected to be released by the governing body at the end of the week.

ISBAT University is the latest team to debut in the competition this year, while Kampala International University will also return to the competition after a two year absence.

The league is expected to kick off at the home of the champions, Uganda Martyrs University Nkozi, who defeated St. Lawrence University 1-0 at the Phillip Omondi Stadium last November to win their second title.
