The coach was appointed on a monthlong agreement with his main job to guide the team through the two friendly matches against Mali and Zambia.

Uganda Cranes interim head coach Morley Byekwaso will have a final chance to show what he can offer when the team faces Zambia in an international friendly on Tuesday in Hamriya Stadium in Sharjah, Dubai.

The coach was appointed on a monthlong agreement with his main job to guide the team through the two friendly matches against Mali and Zambia.

Uganda lost the first game to Mali 1-0 in Bamako on Friday night with a number of rookies getting some moments to wear the national threads.

Second-half substitute Lassine Sinayoko scored the goal in the 74th minute from the penalty spot after Hudu Mulyiki stained his debut with the foul that cost the team.

Improve performance

Byekwaso might not have applied for a permanent stay but he and his team have a chance to impress the powers that be.

The coach handed senior debuts to Mulikyi and Denis Omedi and full time for Bright ANukani in the midfield.

Bywekwaso maintained Kenneth Semakula, Aziz kayondo, Halid Lwaliwa and Livingstone Mulondo in the back to shield Joel Mutakubwa.

Team’s vice captain Khalid Aucho handed the midfield with Anukani while Milton Karisa and Richard Basangwa led the line.

He commended the team’s performance but demands more especially in the attacking areas.

“We demonstrated a good team display [but need to do better] in ball possession and quicker advances into the opponent’s final third,” he said.

Uganda is using the match to prepare ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers that begin next month.

The Cranes are in Group G alongside Algeria, Guinea, Mozambique, Botswana and Somalia.

They start their campaign with two clashes way to Guinea and Somalia.

Uganda face a Zambian side that lost to a similar margin against Egypt.

AFCON/World Cup duties

Zambia, on the other side, is preparing for the World Cup qualifiers against Congo and Niger.

They are in Pool E with the two nations, Morocco, Tanzania, Niger and Eritrea.

Besides, the will use the match to fine-tune for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations Group F fixtures against DR Congo, Morocco and Tanzania.
