Francesco Calzona was a part of Luciano Spalletti's Napoli team that included Victor Osimhen before he left to Slovakia.

Italian champions SSC Napoli have appointed Francesco Calzona as their new head coach on an interim basis until the end of the season.

Pulse Sports Nigeria can report that Calzona will become the third manager to coach Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen and his teammates this season.

Transfer guru, Fabrizio Romano, confirmed via a post on social media that Calzona will join the Serie A champions just 48 hours before their crunch Champions League last-16 first leg against Barcelona.

Former assistant Calzona under former history maker Luciano Spalletti, steps in to replace Walter Mazzarri, who Romano adds has been fired after an underwhelming campaign so far.

It is a quick turnaround for the new man at the helm with Napoli hosting Barcelona at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona on Wednesday night.

Calzona, who will hold on to his role as manager of Slovakia, will take charge of his first training session on Monday ahead of being thrust into the spotlight against Xavi's Spanish giants.

The 58-year-old Italian joins from the Slovakia national team and will juggle both roles.

But his immediate priority is steadying the ship at Napoli amid a surprise coaching change before the season-defining visit of Barcelona.
