Omurwa was surprisingly left out of Estrela’s 3-0 win over Portimonense despite the fact he has been a constant starter for the side.

Harambee Stars defender Johnstone Omurwa was left out of the squad as Estrela Amaradora returned to winning ways with a resounding 3-0 win over Portimonense in a Portuguese top-flight clash on Saturday.

Omurwa, who has been a key figure for the club whenever fit, was surprisingly not named in the team after starting their last match, a 1-0 loss to Estoril last Sunday.

Featuring predominantly as a right center back in a back three, Omurwa has played 15 games and started 13 times, making 2.7 tackles and interceptions per 90 and also winning the ball 4.5 times a match.

Omurwa is also very active in possession. FBRef puts him in the 92nd percentile for carries from the back, and in the 86th one for take-ons, showing his willingness to launch attacks from the back.

Omurwa's ability to read the game, make crucial tackles, and contribute offensively has made him a player to watch

Estrela opened the scoring through an own goal by Carlinas in the sixth minute, before extending their lead seven minutes later through Leo Jaba to put them 2-0 up.

They would make it three in the 25th minute after keeper Kosuke Nakamura also, unfortunately, put the ball into his net to ultimately give Estrela all three points and bring an end to their nasty three-game losing streak.

Estrela remain 11th in the league and will be facing Porto next and Omurwa will be hoping he can return for the clash.

His impact in the friendly against Qatar, where he played the full 90 minutes, was particularly notable, helping Kenya secure a 2-1 victory.

Omurwa's potential for a long and successful career is evident as his rise to prominence is a story of hard work and dedication, and his performances in 2023 have solidified his status as a key player in both his club and national team.
