'It was a unique mistake' — Postecoglou disagrees with Klopp replay wish

Tottenham coach Ange Postecoglou kicks against the idea of a replay to rectify the VAR error against Liverpool.

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has respectfully disagreed with the notion of the possibility of a replay of their clash with Liverpool to rectify the scandalous VAR error.

Ange’s team locked horns with Jurgen Klopp’s Tottenham last Sunday, and an arbitration error, now apologised for by the PGMOL, influenced the game in Spur's favour.

Luis Diaz scored the opener for the Reds, but his goal was erroneously ruled out due to miscommunication between the on-field referring team and the assistant referees in the video booth.

Spurs eventually won the game 2-1, and presented with an apology from the referee body, Liverpool’s German boss explained that the admission of guilt does not change his team’s fate, suggesting that only a replay could truly rectify the wrong that had been done.

What Postecoglou said

Many inferred a demand for a rematch from Klopp’s statement, but Postecoglou, who had already passed on his commiserations, understood the German’s sentiments, but on the basis of the inference that had made the rounds on social media, he kicked against the idea.

Postecoglou believes that enough injustice had not been done in the game to warrant a replay. He explains that it was a mistake—an unprecedented one—but an error all the same, and if games were set to be replayed on the basis of such mishaps, the already overbooked football calendar would become even more packed.

"I think Jurgen's said that and maybe that was taken a little bit out of context," said Postecoglou, per the BBC.

"My view is when you're talking about a replay, there's got to be some sort of threshold and I don't think a mistake is a threshold for that. It was a unique mistake, people have used an unprecedented mistake and I agree with that, but it was still a mistake.

"So, if your threshold for replays is mistakes by individuals, that's 365 games a year, I reckon."
