Makwatta joined the the Botswana giants in August 2022.

Kenya international John Mark Makwatta has left Botswana Premier League side Gaborone United, the club has confirmed.

The former Kenya Police striker left the seven-time Botswana champions with 14 months remaining on his two-year contract.

Makwatta was signed by Gaborone United after parting ways with Kenya Police in August 2022 alongside midfielder Duncan Otieno.

“We would like to announce that the club has terminated the contract of Kenyan striker John Mark Makwata by mutual consent,” the club said in a statement.

“Makwata joined the club at the beginning of the season. We would like to thank Makwata for his contribution during his stay at the club. We wish him all the best in his future endeavours.”

Apart from Makwatta, the club has released winger Obonwe Maome after serving the club for over a decade.

Makwatta did not settle with Gaborone United as head coach Pontsho Piro Moloi did not regularly field him.

Gaborone United finished second on the Botswana Premier League table behind newly-crowned champions Jwaneng Galaxy.

The forward has previously turned out for AFC Leopards, where he was on top of his form, and Zambia’s Zesco United.

The 2016 KPL Golden Boot winner also had a stint at Nairobi City Stars, a side he left in 2013 and joined Ulinzi Stars.

He spent several seasons with the soldiers before joining Zambian outfit Buildcon FC where he stayed until 2018 and joined Kuwait Premier League side Al Nasr Sporting Club.
