Lionel Messi assisted his 15th league goal of the season against Angers to enter an elite list of players in Ligue 1
Paris Saint-Germain forward Lionel Messi has reached another milestone in Ligue 1 after his assist against Angers on Friday night helped Les Parisiens to a 2-1 win to further cement their place at the top of the league.
Messi helps PSG to win over Angers
Messi was on hand to provide another assist for Kylian Mbappe, who gave PSG a 2-0 lead at the time, with a brilliant finish that turned out to be the match-winner against the league’s bottom side.
The superb diagonal pass to put Mbappe through on goal was the Argentine’s 10th assist to Mbappe in the 2022/23 season and his 15th overall in the campaign.
With a 15th league assist this season, Messi became only the third person in Ligue 1 since 2006/07 to record up to 15 goals and 15 assists in a single Ligue 1 season, joining Kylian Mbappe and Eden Hazard in the very exclusive list.
Messi joins Mbappe and Hazard in elite club
With his 30th goal contribution of the season in his 27th game, Messi joined Mbappe from the 2021/22 season, who had 28 goals and 17 assists, as well as Eden Hazard from the 2011/12 season, who scored 20 goals and provided 16 assists, as Lille went on to win the Ligue 1 title as the only three people to achieve the feat since data collection started.
Despite the fractious relationship with PSG fans, Messi continues to show his quality on the pitch and leads the league this season in goal contributions, helping the club to potentially retain the Ligue 1 crown they claimed last season as well.
With rumours of a departure from PSG intensifying, one can only wonder how much Les Parisiens will miss the World Cup should he call it quits at the end of the season when his contract expires.
