Luis Rubiales is reportedly set to quit his role as the RFEF president following pressure for him to resign for forcing Spain national team player Jennifer Hermoso into a kiss on the lips after the Women's World Cup final

Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales is reportedly set to resign when the RFEF conducts a general meeting later today.

Rubiales in hot water over controversial kiss

Rubiales has come under immense pressure to abdicate his seat as RFEF President following a scandal caused by his grabbing Spain international midfielder Jennifer Hermoso after La Roja’s victory in the Women’s World Cup and kissing her on the lips.

While the former Levante defender issued a public apology over the incident on Monday after initially calling those who questioned his actions “idiots,” the backlash against him has not subsided, with many important voices inside and outside Spain calling for him to step down from his role as president of the RFEF.

The Spanish football governing body has been forced to call an emergency general meeting over the issue, and Rubiales is now the subject of a FIFA investigation. According to reports from Cardena Ser radio, he will succumb to the pressure to resign soon.

The Spanish outlet reports that Rubiales will announce his resignation at the RFEF’s general meeting, bringing to an end a controversial tenure as president of the Spanish FA.

Rubiales took over the reins of Spanish football from former president Angel Maria Villar, who was arrested on corruption charges in 2017, promising to bring transparency and wholesale changes to the federation, but looks set to bow out in disgrace like his predecessor.

He was widely denounced for sacking Spain manager Julien Lopetegui mere days before the 2018 World Cup and was also at the centre of a scandal that forced the Spanish Super Cup to be played in Saudi Arabia instead of Spain, while also being exposed for denigrating certain LaLiga clubs in leaked text messages.

Hermoso, through her footballer’s union, Futpro, has asked for exemplary measures to be taken against Rubiales, countering an allegedly fake statement put out on her behalf by the RFEF, and she could get her wish if Rubiales quits his role as president as expected.
